Separating Fact from Fiction: Demystifying Myth in Integrative Medicine

"Integrative Medicine is against conventional medicine."

Unfortunately, you may find yourself reading this and believing that integrative medicine and conventional medicine work in opposite ways and that one is better or worse than the other.

Often, the term "Integrative Medicine" is used incorrectly, so you should be cautious when reading about the subject or seeking professionals in this field.

Integrative medicine combines the best of both worlds and recognises the value of conventional medicine and its interventions, along with complementary therapies (e.g., nutrition, acupuncture, yoga, mindfulness, herbal medicine, massage, ...) that are properly evidenced as effective and efficient, and therefore safe to be implemented in clinical practice.

Neither is better than the other; they complement each other and are equally important and valuable for our health and well-being.

Integrative medicine focuses on individualised and holistic care of the person, encompassing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects, as each person is a unique being. It seeks understanding of the true root cause of the problem and emphasizes health promotion through lifestyle changes, rather than focusing solely on symptom treatment.

If you have an acute health problem (e.g., infection, trauma, ...), conventional medicine most likely has options for you. If you have a chronic health issue (e.g., endometriosis, PCOS, ...), an integrative approach (combining conventional medicine with evidenced-based complementary therapies) may help you to manage symptoms, live in better health, and improve your quality of life.

You have an active role in your health, and that's why it is important for you to have the knowledge on your side.

Knowledge is powerful so that you can make informed decisions and feel empowered in your own health.
